My Dad is buying a Suburban. It has quite a few miles on it(230k), but it’s a solid, well kept example for a great price. It’s an 8.1/4WD/4.10 truck, so it has the 12k lb tow rating he wanted. Our theory is that if something does break, for the price we are getting it, we’ll still be under the price of the next cleanest example.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

We’re heading down to Jacksonville on Friday to pick it up. Nothing like a 300 mile trip with a 496 cubic inch big block.

I have no need for one, but I really like these 8.1 trucks. I particularly want an Avalanche. But again. I have no need for one.

Dad wanted an Avalanche, but THE ONE sold the day before his truck sold. This just means he has more new buggy money.

His V6 Ram only got 17, and forums have said 14 isn’t uncommon for this. So it’s worth the power trade off.

My sister had one with similar mileage. She bought it with only 70k miles, and drove it to 240k miles. The last year she spent $5000 on it, and then decided to trade it in. She really should of kept it at that point. She’d replaced all the most common failure items.

Would be nice if that one already has a rebuilt trans, and/or the fuel injection replaced. Those are the 2 major items. Everything else is cheaper, especially if you do your own repairs.

We also have a 9k lb camper to tow, and the Ram pulls less than my 4Runner.

The gas stations along your route are salivating.

I think we can tackle fuel issues if they arise, and transmissions aren’t too hard to find for it.

I averaged 12mpg on a 1000 mile trip in my 4Runner when gas was over double the current price, we are prepared.

Just out of curiosity, if you’re pulling a 9,000lb camper, why not go diesel?

What are you planning on using that massive tow rating for? Camper? Race car trailer?

Up front and long term cost. Plus, I’ve pulled 14k with a 6.0 on more than one occasion, the 8.1 will be more than enough.

“Massive”

We have a camper currently, but no truck to pull it with.

Comparatively massive. I know it’s not a big diesel but...

I just regularly pull more than that for work, so it’s not that huge to me.

Back in the day when gas was cheap, I had few other living expenses (we’ll call it 2005-2007ish) a nd I spent awhile being an owner-operator hot shot driver without having a CDL or commercial insurance , I had a 2001 GMC 3500 dually/crew cab/4WD with the 8.1/4.10's/Allison 5 speed auto. It was beast of a truck, and it towed well up to about 14k. The down side was that it got 10mpg unloaded on the highway, 6mpg around town, 6mpg towing less than 10k and around 4mpg towing more than 10k. I imagine a suburban should do a bit better than that.

Maybe the coolest thing about that truck was that it’s GVWR was high enough that it was exempt from federal emissions standards for gasoline engines in light trucks at the time. This meant that it came from the factory with no EGR system and no catalytic converters, which I thought was neat.

Yep, trans can be had for $300 at the local u-pull-it. Just expensive if you pay someone else to swap it. Good luck on the road trip.

Thanks! The dealer has pretty high ratings amd seems to specialize in well maintained, high mileage trucks, so hopefully we do luck out.

With 16,000ish pounds of 52-foot trailer on the goose-neck hitch, that 496 was pretty much wide-open most of the time to maintain 70-75ish on the flats and as much as it could climbing hills. The 8.1 started to struggle when towing more than about 11 or 12k.
